8 character file name

Did you know that there is a limit to how long a file name can be? Did you know that the character limit also includes the folder name? And what about the Path? Let's take a look at the long folder and file names in Windows. I recently recovered files from several Windows computers for a client. He asked that I put them onto an external drive for storage.

But I ran into a problem, file names that were too long. Now allot of people think that the maximum length for the name of a File in Windows is characters. But that is not correct. Technically, Folders are also a File but with a unique attribute designating it as a Folder. And Folder and Sub-Folder names are also included in the full name of the File.

So, the File's actual name consists of the Folder and Sub-Folder name s as well. All of these names factor into the character limit.

But what about Apache? Think of following scenario; a web application running on Apache on Windows, is creating a file with a long name that should not be guessed by an attacker. For example it creates a session file or an SQL backup file. In this case the security of this application relies on the fact that the name of this file cannot be guessed. If I can access this file using the short file name then all the security is broken. Being curious if this problem is a real life problem, I looked at two of the most popular backup plugins for WordPress.

Both of them are affected by this problem, which is explained in detail below. I use as many as you need beacuse it make sense. We are not living in a dos world any more. Trying to make sense of those 8 letter names is a thing of the past! Message 5 of That's easy. Our file names are our part numbers! As far as our production drawings go we will NEVER grow out of the 8 digit limit, at least in the foreseeable future, in other words, my great, great, great, great grand children will long be dead before this company has a need to use more than 8 digits for their part numbers.

Message 6 of Though most of our filenames don't need more than 8 characters we have no problem doing it when it is warranted or just clearer. Also, Windows can handle chars in a filename, Macs can handle 32, and I think Unix can do Though Macs will be Unix based soon. Message 7 of Our file names include client and job numbers, as well as a file content name.

We also use folders and sub-folders to expand on the file names with project names and locations. Our system of file naming is set by the above standard, not by letter number limitations and counts. We are an Architectural firm. Thx, but as JasonTrue outlined this is not a very suitable solution. Sign up or log in Sign up using Google. Sign up using Facebook. Sign up using Email and Password.
